How to set up a sound system.?

I currently have a record player hooked into my preamp (I believe it is a preamp. It has a am/fm radio, and a phone, tape, and cd button. Would it be correct in calling this a preamp?) and two speakers also hooked into my preamp. If I wanted to add an equalizer, would I plug the record play into in and then plug the equalizer into the preamp? Or would I just keep the record player hooked into the preamp and then plug the equalizer in to the preamp also? Or is there another way that's better? Thanks in advance
