Can i use gel & curling iron at the same time?

so i have really thin and straight hair. I never even have to straighten it. But i always wanted to scrunch it but it never works. So i was wondering if i get gel and put it on my hair & then curl it wiith the curling iron will it work? Or will it instantly burn my hair or mess up the curling iron?
