How are Capacitors able to control Frequency in audio circuits?

I understand how capacitors work in typical applications. (i.e. storing charge over time and then releasing it all at once.) However, I don't understand what it is about capacitors that allows them to filter out certain frequencies in audio circuits. (For example the capacitors in equalizers.) Can someone please explain to me the electronic theory of why capacitors are able to do this?
